Introducing a Flame Retardant Adhesive with Superior Structural Performance

Why is Flame Retardancy Important?

Flame retardancy is a critical factor to consider when selecting adhesives for various applications. The choice of adhesive with appropriate flame retardant properties can have significant implications for safety, compliance, and overall product performance.

One of the primary reasons flame retardancy is important in adhesive selection is fire safety. Adhesives are commonly used in industries such as construction, electronics, transportation, and textiles, where the risk of fire can have catastrophic consequences. By choosing flame-retardant adhesives, manufacturers can significantly reduce the likelihood of ignition and slow down the spread of flames. This delay in flame propagation provides valuable time for occupants to evacuate and for emergency responders to control the fire, potentially saving lives and minimising property damage.

Compliance with fire safety regulations is another crucial aspect of adhesive selection. Many countries have strict building codes and regulations that require the use of flame-retardant materials, including adhesives, in certain applications. By choosing adhesives with appropriate flame retardant properties, manufacturers can ensure their products meet the necessary safety standards and avoid legal consequences. Compliance not only ensures the safety of end-users but also protects the reputation of the company. Permabond® ET5441 is accredited to Flammability rating UL94 HB.

In applications involving critical components, such as electronics, flame retardancy becomes even more vital. Adhesives are used extensively in electronic devices, where the risk of fire can lead to severe damage or loss of functionality. Flame-retardant adhesives help prevent or delay the spread of fire, protecting the sensitive electronic components and minimising damage to the systems. This ensures the reliability and performance of electronic devices, preventing potential failures and malfunctions. ET5411 can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods (such as for wave soldering processes) providing the joint is not unduly stressed.

Transportation industries, including automotive, aerospace, and railways, also rely on flame-retardant adhesives for safety. In the event of accidents or electrical faults, these adhesives play a crucial role in reducing the risk of fire and preventing its rapid spread. By slowing down flame propagation, they provide occupants with more time to evacuate and emergency responders with a better chance of containing the fire. This is especially critical in transportation environments where escape routes may be limited, and a small fire can quickly escalate.

The use of flame-retardant adhesives can also contribute to the overall lifespan and durability of products. By reducing the likelihood of fire-related damage, these adhesives help maintain the structural integrity and functionality of materials and components. This extended product lifespan not only benefits end-users but also reduces maintenance and replacement costs for manufacturers.

The importance of flame retardancy in adhesive selection cannot be overstated. It ensures fire safety, facilitates compliance with regulations, protects critical components, enhances transportation safety, prolongs product lifespan, and manages insurance and liability considerations. By carefully considering flame retardant properties during the adhesive selection process, industries can prioritise safety and meet the demanding requirements of their applications.

Why Choose Permabond® ET5441 for Flame Retardant Applications?

Permabond® ET5411 is a two part adhesive with a soft paste consistency. When fully cured, ET5411 exhibits exceptional chemical and temperature resistance and is ideal for bonding metal substrates in applications that require excellent resistance to high temperature. It’s controlled flow properties combined with its ease of mixing and application, enables the adhesive to be used where gap filling is required (maximum gap fill 2mm)

ET5411 can withstand higher temperatures for brief periods (such as for paint baking and wave soldering processes) providing the joint is not unduly stressed. The minimum temperature the cured adhesive can be exposed to is -40°C (-40°F) depending on the materials being bonded. It is not recommended for use in contact with strong oxidising materials.
